Summer Tips For Dog Parents

Summer in Boulder is beautiful, sunny, and provides plenty of opportunities to spend time with your best friend outdoors. However, along with the sunshine comes the heat, which can pose a risk to me if proper precautions are not taken. That’s why I’ve put together this list of summer tips for dog owners, so that both you and your pup can enjoy this summer while staying safe.

MAKE SURE WE HAVE PLENTY OF FRESH WATER

As a pet owner, you should always keep plenty of fresh water around for us, but in the summer, this is even more essential. Whether we are spending a lot of time outdoors in the sun or even indoors in the A/C, our furry coat may make the weather seem even hotter to us. Fresh water to drink will keep us hydrated and help cool us down.

MONITOR STRENUOUS ACTIVITY

While we may act like we are ready to go for your run everyday with you, we may not realize how much the heat is affecting us. As dog parents, it’s your responsibility to ensure that your best friends aren’t exerting ourselves in the hot sun. Try to avoid too much strenuous activity or provide us with a place to cool off if you're spending a lot of time outdoors. A nice dip in a stream or pond can help us keep cool.

KEEP OUR PAWS COOL

As humans, you don’t put much thought into the temperature of the pavement or cement. But, if your dog isn’t wearing shoes like you are, the pavement can burn their feet. Getting us some booties to wear while going for walks is an easy way to make sure we are comfortable — and let’s face it, boots on us are adorable.

DON'T LEAVE US ALONE IN A HOT CAR

While we feel this point should be obvious, it needs to be said. Even if you are just planning on running into the store for a second, you should never leave us alone in the car on a hot day. The temperature inside of your car can rise quickly to well over what the outside temperature is and become extremely dangerous for us.
